The Fundació Foto Colectania hosts ‘Vivian Maier. In Her Own Hands ‘ an exhibition of photos taken by Vivian Maier, an amateur French-American photographer who was discovered by chance a couple of years before her death in 2009 and in a short space of time rose to global fame.

Maier worked as a nanny in the Chicago area for over 40 years and took her photos in her spare time. Mostly she photographed the people and architecture of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and she often recorded the daily life of the undertrodden of these cities.

The exhibition features over 100 photos dating from between 1950 and 1980, both in black and white and colour. Through these photos one can appreciate Maier’s unique photographic language and how her visual experience of discreet and silent observation of the world around her. Maier’s images offer touching insights into the everyday life of post war America offering humour as well as tragedy.
