The Uefa Champions League final on Saturday 28th of May 2011 broke all records for the most-watched sporting event on TV and even eclipsed viewing figures of the US Super Bowl.
A staggering 109 million viewers tuned in for the dramatic showdown between Catalunya’s FC Barcelona and the UK’s Manchester United, which is three million more than February’s Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals attracted.
According to the yearly report from Futures Sports and Entertainment, while both events continue to grow, the Uefa Champions League appeals to a far broader global demographic, whereas the Superbowl audience is mostly confined to the USA.
In third place is Formula 1’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with an audience of 54 million, and Usain Bolt’s 100 metres final from the athletics world takes fourth place with with 33 million viewers.
According to Spanish Television statistics, 2,298000 people tuned in for the game in Catalunya. Festivities carried on well into Sunday after Barcelona achieved a convincing win over Manchester 3-1.
